A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” affirmed the national leader.
The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in national works. They were executed at an accelerated rate, beating expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.
