Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from captain Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple conversations following England's loss in the second match of the Ashes series against Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," remarked Stokes.

However, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "weak men" comment subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before this match, Stokes said his players had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of something special entering this game."

Australia Close of Historic Series Victory

The opener's wicket on day four came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left England 207-6 in pursuit of a notional total of 435.

This means, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an insurmountable three-nil advantage with three matches played.

Defeat will extend the English team's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in just eleven days of cricket – after England losing the initial matches in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably hard coming here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's performance in Adelaide probably answers questions about his short-term future in the side, Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is talk from the outside. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he finished.
