In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.
The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement
According to the formal agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.
Broader Political Consultations Underway
In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of major political leaders. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the uprising.
After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
